How to Stick with your Yoga Program

 

How many times have you started a wellness / fitness/ yoga program and then stopped?  Especially this time of year! The second week in February is when all the new years resolutioners start to drop off.  So how can you prevent yourself from dropping off your plan and actually stick with it?  Here are four things you can do to help you stay on track and stick with your mind body fitness program long term.  

 

1.  Find a class you like!  Find a style &  teacher whose teaching style you like.   Do you prefer a fitness based class?  Athletic vinyasa style?  Hot yoga?  Or more passive, gentle, or restorative class?  Are you looking for a teacher who integrates yoga philosophy into the class or more of a functional anatomy / alignment based instructor?  Try several of them out.  There are so many options.  You just need to find a style that resonates with you.  Once you find a style and a teacher that you connect with, you are more likely to stick with it.  

 

​2.  Make it Convenient.  The fewer barriers there are to getting to a class, the more likely you will be to keep doing it.  Convenience is  a big factor in consistency.  Find a class that is close to home, work, or even on the way home.  For even more convenience, you can take online classes in the comfort of your home. You can hop out of bed and roll out your mat.  You can get your yoga in in less time than it takes to drive to a studio!

 

 

3.  Fit it into your schedule.  Finding a class that fits into your life and schedule is another thing that can help you stick with a yoga practice.  Scheduling it into your daily routine, close to something else that you are already doing can help.  Maybe you do it as soon as you wake up, or right before bed.  Another option is to integrate it into the middle of your day.  One recommendation especially good for entrepreneurs is to work in chunks of time.  Maybe you work for 30 min, then take a break.  Or you have 2 clients, then take a break.  You can fit short yoga sequences into those breaks.  5-10 minutes in between work sessions can help you get more active, reduce stress, increase energy, and help you stick with it!  What you don't want is a class at 5:30pm,  when your kid has soccer practice, or at 8pm when you are putting the kids to bed! Plan to fit it into your schedule & lifestyle.  

 

4.  Pick a yoga program that fits your needs/ goals.

What are you looking to get out of a yoga practice?  Are you looking to increase flexibility?  Destress?  Rebalance your body after a baby?  Complement your running program?  There are teachers and programs out there specifically designed for just about everything.  Think about what you want to gain from mind body fitness classes, and chose a program that will help you get there. If you can’t find one that fits, you can work with a private instructor to customize a program specifically for you.  Moving towards a goal will help keep you motivated to show up and make it a priority.  

 

These four things can help you stay on track and stick with your mind body fitness program long term.  By sticking with it long term, you will start to see the changes that you want.  You will improve your overall health, feel less stressed, and more energetic.  Use these tips to empower yourself to stay committed to becoming your healthiest self.
